Historic home features

Recently I was asked, "What it is about historic homes that make them so unique...and what are some of the more unique features and qualities of an historic home that people love so much?

There are so many things to list, of course, and each homeowner has their preference for one reason or another. Stone, for instance. The permanence of stone. Just the "look" of stone has intrigued mankind for centuries. Most of the famous buildings down through history are built of stone.

Another features of historic homes are windows: 6/6 or 6/9 or 12/12...and why are they made that way? Then there are random-width floors of pine, oak, or chestnut (if the house is very old, possibly 17th century).

If you look closely at the craftsmanship of an historic home, you'll find rose head hand made nails, lima bean latches, H & L hinges, soapstone hearths, walk-in fireplaces, double or single pie stairs...and the list goes on.
